OGA adopts a standoff approach to annotation. Any kind of annotation is treated as a layer of annotation kept separate from other layers of annotation. Contrary to inline annotations, such a strategy guarantees that different, potentially infinite, kinds of annotations can be linked, directly or indirectly, to each other in a graph structure.

OGA provides data serialized as PAULA XML 1.1, an open access standard for standoff annotation.
